What is a Pylarify PET/CT Scan?
A Pylarify PET/CT scan is an advanced diagnostic imaging test used to detect and monitor prostate cancer. It combines positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) imaging with a radiotracer called Pylarify®. This tracer targets prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a protein found in high levels on prostate cancer cells.
How does Pylarify Work?
PYLARIFY® attaches to prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a protein found on the surface of most—approximately 95%—prostate cancer cells. By targeting PSMA, PYLARIFY® can give your doctor a clear image and additional information on the location and extent of the cancer.
Why is a Pylarify PET/CT Scan Important?
- Locates the spread of cancer, including metastases.
- Detects recurrence, especially with rising PSA levels after treatment.
- Improves treatment planning with highly accurate imaging.
- Helps avoid unnecessary treatments by providing detailed insights.
Pylarify PET/CT scans are more accurate than traditional imaging methods like bone scans or standard CT scans.
What Happens During the Procedure?
- Preparation: Avoid eating for 4–6 hours and discuss medications with your doctor.
- Injection: A small amount of Pylarify tracer is injected into your vein.
- Scanning: You lie still on a table while the PET/CT scanner captures detailed images.
- After the Scan: Resume normal activities and drink plenty of water to flush the tracer.
